Research Specialist (General)

Salary:            Tasmanian State Service Award – General Stream Band 6, Salary Range $89,714 to $101,591 per annum.

Location:        Parliament House, Hobart

Permanent Full-time position

Applications are invited for the position of Research Specialist (General) in the Parliamentary Research Service of the Tasmanian Parliament.  Appointment will be made by the Presiding Officers of the Parliament in accordance with the provisions of the Parliamentary Privilege Act 1898.

The principal role of the Research Specialist (General) is to provide specialist analytical research services to Members, senior Parliamentary staff and committees.  The position requires a demonstrated ability to conduct research at an advanced level and superior knowledge and broad experience relevant to the position.

The incumbent requires highly effective oral and written communication skills, an understanding of the parliamentary and political environment and have the capacity to exercise discretion when required and treat sensitive matters with strict confidentiality.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated ability to conduct research at an advanced level and superior knowledge and broad experience relevant to the position.
  2. Highly effective oral and written communication skills including strong reasoning skills.
  3. Ability to work consistently with precision and attention to detail.
  4. Strong analytical and problem solving skills and sound judgement.
  5. Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and general time management skills.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the parliamentary and political environment including sensitivity to the requirements of clients in this environment.
  7. Appropriate personal qualities (e.g. service orientation, initiative, flexibility, discretion, integrity, thoroughness and self-motivation) and the ability to work effectively, both individually and as a member of a team.
  8. Ability to assist with maintaining databases and updating of web sites.

Qualifications:

    • Appropriate tertiary qualifications.
    • Post-graduate or other relevant research/analysis experience.
