Born: 05 February 1953
With 3 kids of his own and married to Merrilyn for twenty eight years, Mark Shelton knows the importance of a secure job and a community that supports its own.
Mark believes that it is vital for young Tasmanians to have the opportunity to build a career. He started out as an apprentice mechanic and progressed to a fully fledged mechanic before turning to helping the next generations of mechanics build a career by teaching at TAFE.
As a keen player of cricket and football for many years, Mark now prefers the off-field activities and supporting the local community in their sporting interests.
This involvement has lead to many enjoyable times and the opportunity to meet many interesting people. This interest in the community is what led Mark to become involved in local government and eventually becoming Mayor of Meander Valley.
Being Mayor of Meander Valley for the past seven years has enabled Mark to meet many community members from a diverse range of backgrounds. His goal has always been to mould that diversity into a stronger community with a sound economic base. Mark has been involved with small business for most of his life.
He started off through his fathers farm contracting business and then the purchasing of his own property. Today Mark and his brother work this 200 acre property with their sons.
His father in-law started his fuel business in the early 80s and Mark maintained his vehicles and part time assisted with deliveries. Together with his brother-in-laws, they purchased the business on his retirement. They have developed those businesses to now incorporate school bus contracts.
Mark takes great satisfaction in knowing that his decisions and actions are helping build these businesses and achieving benefits for his whole family. Mark believes in the benefits of small business and its ability to drive our economy. |
