Lara is a founding member of Emily's List, an organisation that provides financial and mentoring support to progressive Labor women candidates across Australia. She is also a member of the Australian Republican Movement, Australians for Reconciliation, TasDEC Global Learning Centre, Greening Australia and the Mines Victims and Clearance Trust (MIVAC).

Lara's other interests include photography, theatre, swimming, squash, going to the movies, watching sport and listening to music.

In 1991, Lara performed with the Old Nick Theatre Company and was a Board Member. She also performed with the Phoenix Theatre Company at the Deloraine Drama Festival in 1993.

1996 - 1998 During her term, Lara served on the Public Accounts Committee, Select Committee into the Tasmanian Industrial Relations Act and the Select Committee into Grocery Prices and Markets.
24 Feb 1996 Elected in the seat of Lyons. At 23, she was the youngest woman to be elected to an Australian Parliament. Her first appointment was to assist the Minister for Youth Affairs. In June of 1997, she was allocated the Shadow Minister Portfolios of Environment and Planning and Youth affairs.

Education and Qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts and Law Degree from the University of Tasmania.

2001 - 2002 Office of the Premier and Secretary to Cabinet as a Researcher and Electorate Officer
2000 Parliamentary Research Officer for the Member for Dunfermline East, Mrs Helen Eadie, in the Scottish Parliament.
1999 - 2000 Temporary Administrative work in London - work placements included: Head Office of Tomy Toys, a truck delivery company, a lawyer's office, a publishing house and an administrative company.

Australian Labor Party:

Lara first joined the ALP in 1990, serving as Vice-President of her then local branch of Sorell for ten years. In the year 2000, she joined the new Richmond Branch, where she was also elected as Vice President in 2001. She is currently a member of the Beltana Branch.

In December 1998, Lara became the youngest President of the Tasmanian Branch of the ALP. She has also served as President of Young Labor.

Lara has been a delegate to the last three National Conference's of the ALP, being the youngest woman ever elected to a National Conference in 1993.

Lara is currently on the Party's Administrative Committee.
