Community News

What an honour to be shown some of the new facilities in the dedicated Women and Children's Precinct at the Launceston General Hospital. As Minister for Women I am thrilled we are able to provide high quality patient care through the lutha building "gum tree" in palawa kani. The space brings together allied health services and dedicated treatment rooms that will nurture and support our patients.

Clown Doctors week! 🥳 This morning we launched the Roadside Appeal, raising money to help keep the Clown Doctors at the bedside of sick children in our local hospitals.

The wind and drizzle could do nothing to dampen our spirits as our community came together to plant trees marking Queens Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. So special to join West Tamar Landcare Inc. and Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC at Frankford Soldiers Memorial Hall.

To truly understand the devastation of what it means to lose top soil from your land, washed away in floods, you need to stand on the harsh clay ground to realise nothing can grow here. Today I joined Premier Jeremy Rockliff as we toured flood damaged farms across the North and North West and met with farming families who were not only generous with time but also so honest about what they now face. Crops lost, fences gone, milk dumped… so much uncertainty and anxiety. It’s important our farmers know they don’t stand alone at this time. We stand with them. Thank you to Lauren from Rural Alive & Well Hugh from Tasmanian Farmers & Graziers Association for joining us.

Seniors Week… a time to make new connections or reconnect with others. What a treat for me to spend some time at the Bellerive Hub Open Day meeting volunteers and participants. From historians to those with a passion for all things crafty, I was enthralled at every station.

Look who I got to cuddle 💙 This is 14 month old Winnie who was part of the launch of a new Wildlife Rehabilitation Strategy and Action Plan. Our volunteer wildlife carers and rehabilitators are such exceptional people and they have played a huge part in putting this strategy together, a first for Tasmania.

I’m not going to pretend I wasn’t a little scared of the thousands of bees. But how could I refuse with the release of the 2020/21 Bee Industry Survey showing such exceptional growth. Honey production is up by 151% compared to 2018/19. Such a resilient industry, bouncing back from bushfires and covid.

Another extraordinary moment in this unbelievable life my family and I are living. Being sworn in at Government House as the new Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence. This will weigh heavily on my shoulders as my heart aches for those Tasmanians, primarily women, who live each day with impacts of violence and abuse towards not only themselves, but their children.

Check out the new playing surface and lights at the Legana Tennis Club. Great to join President Andrew Faulkner and Life Member Ros Burr at the official opening of the refurbished courts, now with artificial grass surface. This was achieved through the State Governments Improving the Playing Field Grants.

Great to join members of our wine industry in launching the DrinkWise tasting tracker - a very simple tool to help track alcohol consumption when enjoying our wonderful vineyards and cellar doors across Tasmania. Stay tasteful while tasting.

I was honoured to announce the Women’s Leadership Scholarships: Board Diversity Scholarships 2022. These scholarships will help improve gender balance on key decision making bodies such as boards and committees, supporting our push towards gender equality in the State and support women and girls to not just participate equally in all opportunities but to thrive and succeed. Great to join Emma Bennison, recipient of the Company Director’s Course at today’s media launch and hear how this opportunity will benefit her into the future. Congratulations to Emma and all the recipients.

It was a privilege to announce the Trees on Farm grant recipients and great to acknowledge Private Forests Tasmania. Inspiring to meet the next generation of agricultural leaders from Exeter, Riverside, Scottsdale, Grammar and St Patrick's College.

Water is the lifeblood of our agricultural communities. As Minister for Primary Industries and Water along with Andrew Kneebone, CEO Tasmanian Irrigation and Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass we launched water sales through the $290 million Tamar Irrigation Scheme. The impact of water surety on land owners such as Simon Dornauf from Hillwood Berries Farmgate is enormous. Simon shared how this will enable great opportunities for expansion on their already thriving farm.

Fantastic to see some of the successful grant applications for the Sport and Recreation Equipment program. Beaconsfield Tennis Club, Tamar Rowing Club and West Tamar Pony and Riding Club to name just a few. Riverside Cricket Club receiving a grant for a defibrillator and first aid kits along with a bowling machine. I met with Peter Scott as he discussed a personal story of the use of this equipment and just how vital a defib is. A great addition to the club and for the surrounding precinct.

What a day! Excited, nervous and humbled to step into the portfolios of Disability Services, Primary Industries and Water and Minister for Women. Most amazing part of the day was hearing my mum cry when I told her about the Disability Ministry. Thank you to Premier, Jeremy Rockliff for this opportunity.

Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group and Tasmanian Farmers & Graziers Association

Thrilled to open the Tasmanian Ag Innovation Expo at Hagley Farm School today and meet some key industry stakeholders. It was a privilege to announce the Trees on Farm grant recipients and great to acknowledge Private Forests Tasmania. Rural Alive and Well Great to attend the annual update from RAW - Rural Alive & Well. Their mission is to build mentally healthy and resilient rural communities to reduce the prevalence of suicide and what a difference they are making through their various programs – RAW Country, RAW Connect, RAW Industry and RAW Workplace.

Exeter Golf You won't believe it when I tell you a Defibrillator was stolen from the Exeter Golf Club along with tools and equipment. It's a low act to steal a piece of life saving equipment and obviously our thief had some remorse and it was returned two weeks later - unfortunately the equipment was not. So Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass and I made a contribution to help the club install security cameras right around the club house and storage areas.

WT Landcare Hats off to West Tamar Landcare Inc. marking 30 years of dedication and service to our community. West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl was most elegant as she unveiled this gorgeous bandicoot sculpture to mark the occasion. Also some very special moments as we remembered landcare members and friends who have passed with some tree plantings, together with the presentation of life membership to the extraordinary volunteers with over 20 years service. What an afternoon 💙🌿

Such a joyful evening at the Exeter Community Carols. Around 2,000 gathering to enjoy the amazing local talent and join in the carol singing. Congratulations to the Tamar Valley Christian Church and the West Tamar Council for gifting this event to us all. Always fun to join Matthew Garwood on the Stage, albeit to host - not to sing!

Speak out is a state-wide advocacy service for people with disability, supporting them to speak up and be heard. Standing Strong, Standing Together.

Meet the women of the National Seniors Association Launceston Branch. A few months ago their computer died so today I joined forces with our Deputy Mayor Danny Gibson and we handed over a cheque so they can buy a replacement. Staying connected has been vital especially over the past 18 months and Danny and I know the ability to send emails and invitations plays a huge part in that. Nearly cried when Shirley gave us some special words… “To Jo and Danny, words of thanks can never be enough. We will treasure your help and with every key pressed we will remember."

Welcome to our newest Australian Citizens. Some of the beautiful images from today's Citizenship Ceremony in Launceston.

Hard to control the emotions watching the new TV ads that will hit our screens very soon as part of Danny Green's Stop the Coward Punch Campaign. As a mum, this is just so scary that with one hit, a life can be taken

So special to join the Women's Legal Service Tasmania Inc today launching its podcast ‘Rule of Thumb’. The series was made to offer listeners an insight into the difficulties and inequalities women face in legal procedures. While this podcast is a brilliant tool for any woman who finds herself in need of legal advice, it also has powerful messages to help us all be a better active bystander. What do you do if you think a friend, family member or neighbour is suffering from abuse? You can find advice right here.

If you want to be inspired, check out Camps Tasmania and its extraordinary group of young leaders. These guys run a series of camps throughout the year and I had the privilege of spending an evening at the Summer Camp for 12-16 year olds at Paper Beach. From across the State, these young people come together and experience true acceptance, new adventures and are supported in stepping outside of their comfort zone. Camp Director Nat, a former Prospect High School student, and her leadership team are truly inspirational. The camps are proudly supported by the Rotary Club of West Tamar.
