"Backbenchers" is a term used to describe Members of Parliament who are not Ministers or Shadow Ministers. The name comes from the fact that Ministers and Shadow Ministers usually sit in the front row of the Chamber, and are known as "frontbenchers", though this is not always the case in Tasmania.
Most Members of Parliament start as backbenchers, learning the procedures of the Parliament and working in their electorate to represent the needs of their community.

Backbenchers typically sit in the back row behind the Ministers and Shadow Ministers.
