Over two centuries, the Legislative Council has played a vital role in shaping Tasmania’s democracy. This bicentenary offers an opportunity to reflect on the Council’s rich and complex history and the generations of Tasmanians who have contributed to its work, while also looking to the future, recognising the Council’s purpose in representing Tasmania’s diverse communities, rigorously reviewing and scrutinising legislation, and upholding accountability and oversight—guided by enduring principles of integrity and independence in service to the people.
