Independent Members are elected Members of Parliament who do not belong to a political party. They can be elected to either the House of Assembly or the Legislative Council. They sit on the Crossbench.

Independent Members work in the Parliament by representing their communities, scrutinising (closely checking) the work of Government and debating and voting on proposed new laws for Tasmania. Independent Members can propose new laws and when they do, these Bills are called Private Member's Bills.

In the House of Assembly, Independent Members sit on the Crossbench between the Government and Opposition Members. For most of its history, the Legislative Council has had a majority of Independent Members, and the seating plan is not tied to the same structure.
