The Leader for the Government in the Legislative Council is an elected Member of the Legislative Council who acts as the Government spokesperson in that Chamber. They are appointed by the Premier.
Most Government Ministers are in the House of Assembly, so when a Bill they have responsibility for goes to the Legislative Council, the Leader for Government acts on their behalf.
The Leader for Government is also responsible for managing the Government agenda in the Legislative Council and answers questions on behalf of Ministers who sit in the House of Assembly.
Sometimes the Leader is a Member of the Government in which case they are known as the Leader of the Government. Since 2025, an Independent Member, the Honourable Tania Rattray MLC has held this role.
