Tasmanian Regional School Travel Rebate

What is the Tasmanian Regional School Travel Rebate?

The House of Assembly provides a rebate for Tasmanian schools located 75 km or more from Parliament House to travel to Parliament to participate in a House of Assembly Education Office program. $200 is available for schools on a day trip and $400 for schools requiring an overnight stay to visit. Numbers are strictly capped at 20 schools per year, with 10 places available in Terms 1 and 2 and 10 available in Terms 3 and 4.

Why?

Visiting the Parliament of Tasmania helps Tasmanian students to become active and informed citizens. The House of Assembly recognises that distance can be a barrier for some schools to access the Parliament of Tasmania and wants to help overcome this obstacle.

What schools are eligible?

  • A sum of $200 is available for a school undertaking a day trip and $400 for a school visiting as part of an overnight camp.
  • Each school can claim only one payment per calendar year.
  • The rebate is available to a maximum of 20 schools per calendar year. This is split into two rounds, with 10 schools eligible for a visit in Terms 1 and 2, and 10 schools eligible for a visit for a visit in Terms 3 and 4. The rebate is allocated on a “first come, first served” basis.
  • The rebate is available to Tasmanian primary schools, secondary schools and colleges.
  • Teachers must submit the completed application form to an Education Officer on arrival at Parliament House. The rebate is paid into the nominated school bank account after the school visit to Parliament House.
  • The rebate is paid directly into the nominated school bank account.
  • Schools determine how the money is spent, whether on bus hire, accommodation or food. There is no requirement to lodge receipts for the specific expenses.

How can a school apply for the rebate?

Either download the Tasmanian Regional School Travel Rebate Application Form or request it be sent by mail when booking a House of Assembly Education Office program. The school’s place in the scheme is registered when the booking is confirmed.

How is the rebate paid?

Teachers must submit the completed application form to an Education Officer on arrival at Parliament House. The rebate is paid into the nominated school bank account after the school visit to Parliament House.

Is there a cost for attending the Parliament of Tasmania?

What can the rebate be used for?

The rebate is designed to assist schools to travel to the Parliament of Tasmania and undertake a House of Assembly Education Office program. It is intended to help cover some of the costs of travel to Parliament House, but can be used by the school to cover any associated cost.
